Winter School in mathematics

Al-Khawarizmiya Association, jointly with the Institute of Science and Technology of C.U.E.O. (in Sidi-Mansour, El-Oued), organized a short Winter School during three days: Saturday 27-Monday 29, December 2008; this period corresponds to the second week of the winter academic holydays. Four courses have been planned and delivered:

·        Lectures on general and linear algebra for first and second-year University students given by Pr Hamza Khelif, C.U.E.O.) (Algebraic structures of sets and algebraic properties of vector spaces and maps on vector spaces). Duration: 6hours.

·        Lectures on matrix calculus given by Pr Abdelouahab Mansour, C.U.E.O. (properties of normed topological vector spaces; matrix norms and usual inequalities). Audience: students from the second and the third year level in the university. Duration: 4hours30minutes.

·        A first course on Analysis intended to first-year University students given by Pr Ismail Djebali, E.N.S. Kouba (Algiers) (Axiomatic definition of the real line; real sequences: the bounding theorem with applications to calculating some undetermined limits). Duration: 4hours30minutes.

·        Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations given by Pr Ismail Djebali, E.N.S. Kouba (Algiers) (1st order linear equations; 2nd order linear equations with constant coefficients; proof of the Cauchy-Lipschitz Theorem and the sequence of iterated approximations). Audience: students from the second and the third year level in the university. Duration: 3hours.

As a general rule, each lecture has consisted of some fundamental reminders regarding the topic to be discussed during the session and then the course has been illustrated by means of some examples of application and/or solved exercises.

According to the lecture topics of this winter school, the students have been divided into two groups:

1.    Group 1: 1st and 2nd Year Bachelor Students in Mathematics and Physics

2.   Group 2: 2nd and 3rd Year Bachelor Students in Mathematics and Physics.

Each group has comprised about 20 students. Given the winter holydays, most of students did not rush to this winter school though some of them, who have previously registered, were not able to attend the courses, probably for some family reasons. However, we point out that students who attended the school were really very studious, engaged, interested, interesting and filled with ardor! Indeed, pleasant and fruitful discussions have enlivened interactive lecture sessions every day.

Finally, the lecturers wish to express their thanks to the Head of the Institute of Science and Technology, Pr El-Habib Guedda, for his constant availability and for assuring sweet tea and peanut each tea-break; this was a good opportunity for lectures, students and other friends to meet, discuss and share opinions.

On Monday 29 at 12h30, the school has been closed. Then the three lecturers made an appointment with students to meet again for the 2009 summer school but some of these students have asked for a spring school end of March 2009.
