OPENING SESSIONS
The School started July, 26th. A large number of students,
including post-graduate students and teachers in high schools,
attended the first-day lectures. The first two courses were
delivered by:
• Ismail Djebali:
First courses on Analysis and Algebra intended to first-year
University students.
•
Abdelghani Zeghib: Some lectures on geometric curves for
second-year University students.
Since S. Djebali only delivered courses during the first week
26-30, July, Professors Abbdelwahab Mansour (Analysis) and Hamza
Khelif (Algebra) continued delivering courses during the
following two weeks for first-year University students. Further
details may be found below.
PARTCIPANTS
Most of participants belong to either one of the following
classes:
• Students from C.U.E.O. These are mainly students graduating in
Mathematics or Physics Bachelor and willing to improve and
enhance their knowledge (over 30 students).
• Students from C.U.E.O. who are especially involved in the
preparation of September exams (around 40 students).
• Post-Graduate Students and even high-school Mathematics
teachers (5 to 8 people).
Regarding the participation of students and their assiduity,
lectures’ comments can be found below.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
• During tea-breaks, lecturers and students have enlivened
scientific conversations on Master studies in Algeria as well as
on the scientific research in Mathematics and Physics in
general.
• Students from ELK bureau and founding members of this
association have met three times to discuss future activities of
ELK including the preparation of its web site and have share
suggestions and propositions.
• Meeting with local authorities:
- Meeting with Wali (Governor) of El-Oued City.
- Meeting with head and deputy-heads of C.U.E.O. (University
Center of El-Oued).
- Meeting with some newly elected members of El-Oued A.P.C.
(local council), including the Mayor.
- Meeting with members of another local cultural association: Al
Amine Al Amoudi Association.
• Meeting with Olympiad Competition winners. Indeed, these
students need a particular attention from C.U.E.O. teachers who
should use every endeavor to follow their progression within the
university.
• Visit of Ammouri Coranic School in Taksebt, El-Oued.
MEDIA COVERAGE
This first Summer School event has benefited from an exceptional
and large coverage by local Radio Channel. Some of
lecturers were interviewed while some students have expressed
their opinions on the school organization and its impacts on
their scientific and cultural activities in El-Oued City and in
C.U.E.O.
SCIENTIFIC POGRAM OF THE SCHOOL
1. Analysis and Algebra:
A first year course delivered by Ismail Djebali, E.N.S.-Kouba (Algiers).
Content: Overview of the official curricula in
Analysis and Algebra through solving problems from exam subjects
proposed in E.N.S.-Kouba during the period 1992-2002.
However, morning sessions always start with a short reminder of
the main tools needed to master specific topics and to fill up
gaps. Ten short textbooks with a large number of exam problems
have been given by Djebali to A. Mansour, head of
the Institute of Exact Sciences and Technology in C.U.E.O. who
made copies for students to help them preparing for September
final (and decisive) exams.
2. Curves: This
second-year course was delivered by Abdelghani Zeghib, E.N.S.,
Lyon (France)
Content:
Introduction to the theory of curves in metric spaces. The
lectures were focused on metric spaces where the distance
between two points is defined to be the length of the arc
joining these points. This notion allowed the lecturer to
introduce participants to the notion of Riemann spaces, of great
importance in Geometry.
3. Algebra: This
is a follow-up of the first-year course given S. Djebali.
Hamza Khelif (C.U.E.O.) has dealt with the following topics :
Properties of set maps ; relations of order and equivalence ;
partition ; canonical decomposition; isomorphism between two
algebraic structures; groups and sub-groups; isomorphism between
independent vector families; independent families; bases;
matrices associated with isomorphism; matrix of passage.
For each course, a remainder of the main tools has been given
and all of these notions have been illustrated by means of
examples of applications.
4. Analysis: this
second-year course was delivered by Pr Abdelwahab Mansour,
C.U.E.O.
Content:
Introduction to differential equations; first-order differential
equations; second-order differential equations with constant
coefficients.
5. Introduction to the geometry of
surfaces: this second-year course was delivered
by Pr Mohammed Guediri, King Saud University, Ryad (Saudi
Arabia).
Content:
-Definition of a surface; examples ; tangent planes (4 hours)
-First and second fundamental forms; Weingarten operator;
principal curvature; mean curvature; Gauss curvature; minimal
surfaces (06 hours).
6. Complex Analysis:
this second-year course was delivered by Pr Mohammed-Larbi Labbi,
University of Bahrain (Bahrain).
Content:
-History of complex numbers
-Transformations of the complex plane; Euclidian Geometry
-Geometry according to F. Klein (Erlangen Program)
-Transformations preserving distances
- The three-reflection theorem
-Transformations preserving distance ratios
-Holomorphic applications
-Transformations preserving angles.
-Mobius transformations and introduction to non-Euclidean
geometry .
7. Differential Calculus:
this second-year course was delivered by Pr Khaled Saâdallah,
E.N.S.-Kouba (Algiers).
Content:
-Introduction to normed vector spaces (4 hours)
-Definitions and main properties of first-order differentiation
with examples and solved exercises (6 hours)
SCHOOL CLOSING SESSION
The closing ceremony took place at the Youth Center of El-Oued on August,
13th from 09:30 to 11:30. A Public lecture was presented by
Djamel Dou, from C.U.E.O. and K.S.U., Riyadh (Saudi Arabia); the
lecture was entitled « Our view to the world in the shade of
modern physics»; the lecture was followed by a 15-minute debate.
Then, some of the school organizers had their turn to speak; the
closing ceremony ended with the distribution of acknowledgment
certificates to lecturers and certificates of participation to
students who attended the entire school.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The organizers of this Summer School are particularly thankful
and indebted to the following members who were not initially
involved in the organizing committee but who provided great
help:
Larabi Heriez : He set up and prepared the
certificates of participation; he also contributed in the
success of the tea-break.
Rachid Lakhdir: He played a central role as a
permanent contact person between the school organizers and the
local radio channel.
Anouar Elaîb: Through his personal plog “souf
info” (http://soufinfo.maktoobblog.com) he covered the different
activities of the association during the school. He
contributed in arranging meetings with local authorities; the
latter meetings and work sessions were concluded with a dinner
offered by Mayor of El-Oued city.
