Mathematical Olympiads
The Olympiad Competition in Mathematics is a scientific activity of great importance which aims at discovering pupils’ competences and abilities. It may also help stimulating students’ ingenuity whenever they face difficulties in problem solving. Indeed, Olympiads create a spirit of competition and challenge among students who should be well trained and prepared to undertake such a fierce competition. As for teachers, the Competition is undoubtedly a good opportunity to test innate problem solving skills of some of their students. For these virtues, and in order to encourage and stimulate students’ interest in the fundamental sciences, which have known a serious disinterest over the last couple of years, ALK association has decided to organize an annual Competition of Mathematics within Wilaya of EL-Oued.
The first one was organized in April-may 2008. About 500 students took part in the first round of pre-selection of eligible “mathletes”. See the subject of the final exam HERE.
The winners (top ten students) have recieved prizes in the form of computers and cash money; the prizes was offered by Wali (Governor) of El-Oued City who supported and patronized the competition. See the list of winners in the final report HERE. The gold-medal winner scored over 16 out of 20 marks.
The second Olympiad competitions are scheduled for 2008-2009 academic year and consist of two stages: March-April (first round) and May 2009 (final selection). The organizers intend to open these second Olympiads to first level university students and also to pupils from Intermediary (Middle) and even Primary (Elementary) level Schools.
This web page is dedicated to these Olympiads. Among others, you can find links to local, regional, national and international Olympiads; see e.g. (the list is not exhaustive):

Moreover, selected Olympiad problems in Mathematics (or links to foreign Olympiad problems) are presented as soon as available; these problems will undoubtedly help students in the preparation for next competitions. For instance, pdf files for the British Mathematical Olympiad problems (http://www.bmoc.maths.org/) (1993-2008) can be downloaded from http://www.bmoc.maths.org/home/bmolot.pdf. A Collection of several Math-Olympiad-Problems with many international web pages are also available at http://cage.rug.ac.be/~hvernaev/olympiad.html.
In general, the subjects of Mathematics Olympiad cover and are included in the official curricula of the second and the third year in secondary schools or even in University first Mathematics program. However, most of subjects of challenging problems are carefully selected by specialists teaching in High-Schools or in Universities. When choosing a new subject, teachers and educators feature the selected problems and try to put the stress on stimulating pupils’ and students’ abilities and ingenuity, keeping in mind promoting student awareness of Mathematics and hoping that some talented students rise out from isolation. Indeed, it is well known that finding solutions to these problems requires exceptional mathematical ability and deep knowledge of the whole program.
