About al-khawarizmiya Foundation
The idea of founding an association which would undertake the promotion and the fostering of mathematics and fundamental sciences in general emerged during a CIMPA school in differential geometry organized by the University center of El Oued in 2005[see detail].
Indeed, the phenomena of disinclination of students ( specially with talent) to pursue their university education in mathematics and fundamental sciences in general has put the future of these two fields in a great danger, with all its consequences and impact on future of sciences in the country . For evidences one need look no further than the official numbers and statistics offered by the ministry of higher education; 75% of the students are pursuing their studies in social sciences, the rest is divided between all the scientific and technological branches. The situation in the university center of El Oued is similar if not worse. With all the respect to social sciences, the above distribution is highly unbalanced and indeed goes completely against the economical and social needs of the country, and this can be anything except a sign of a healthy or a knowledge-based society.
Now, the situation with mathematics and fundamental sciences, which share a small part of the remaining 25%, is even worse. In view of many social and economical reasons students "suited" for mathematics and basic research rarely chose to pursue their education in Mathematics or one of the fields of fundamental sciences . Mathematics and basic sciences are definitely losing their natural resources. Today sciences and technology are viewed in the country ( and in many other places in the world) as a commodity that is separate from the thought processes that has led to its development.
It is for the above considerations that Al-Khwarizmiya association has been founded and set as one of its primary goals the promotion of mathematics and basic sciences in El Oued.
Al-khawarizmiya foundation runs its activities in close connection with institute of exact sciences and technology of the university center of El Oued and the different local authorities of El Oued.
Although Al-khawarizmiya foundation is officially an association of local character since February 2006, its goals and concerns have no borders. Indeed the struggle of our foundation for keeping Mathematics and basic science alive is only local part of the more global struggle that many scientists and organizations in the world are undertaking. Science and knowledge are neither Northern nor Southern, they are the heritage of all mankind. On the other hand as Polanyi pointed out, " Science cannot flourish unless it is pursued for the sake of pure knowledge" .
Goals and Endeavors:
1- The promotion of Mathematics and its education.
2- The promotion of basic research and the education of fundamental sciences.
3- Detecting and fostering young talents .
4- Organizing and supporting scientific activities (conferences, workshops, schools) and specialized and unspecialized meetings in Mathematics and basics sciences.
5- Organization of scientific competitions in Mathematics and Physics (Olympiads).
6- The creation of space of scientific editions and publications.
7- Building a big scientific library.
8- The creation of space of knowledge-exchange and building bridge between the scientific community and the society through scientific vulgarization.
Al-khawarizmiya Foundation Team: All the members of Al-khawarizmiya foundation are volunteers from different academic and research institutions, local, national and international ones. Moreover each person who shares the same concerns and goals is a member.
